Colonoscopy is a useful test to diagnose diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. Through a flexible tube called colonoscope, you can find details of the colon, illuminated by the light of the colonoscope. Colon diseases or disorders can occur, such as inflammation of the mucosa, diverticula (which are pockets that form inside the colon wall), rectal and colon tumors often caused by benign lesions called polyps.
Thanks to colonoscopy, it is possible to detect the presence of polyps and, at the same time, eliminate them with a simple and rapid operation called “endoscopic polypectomy”.
The indications that indicate the need to undergo this examination are:
It is advisable for family members of patients with these disorders to undergo this examination after the age of 40, as they are at greater risk of contracting a tumor. Colonoscopy is not a traumatic examination: in fact, modern technologies and conscious sedation techniques allow to eliminate any pain related to the introduction of the tube into the intestine.
The colon must be free from any fecal residue, to obtain a precise and thorough examination, for which the patient must follow a diet including a treatment, often by oral solution, aimed at washing the intestine. Before undergoing the examination, it is necessary to warn the doctor if allergic disorders are found during any further endoscopic examinations carried out previously.
The colonoscopy lasts 20 minutes, after which the patient may feel a sensation of tension or fullness (caused by the introduced air), which will disappear quickly
Thanks to endoscopy it is possible to avoid surgical interventions, operating rooms and hospitalizations of any kind, as it is possible to intervene directly in the clinic to remove small polyps (endoscopic polypectomy, following which the removed polyp is then sent to the laboratory for subsequent examination histological). Furthermore, thanks to this examination it is possible to reduce the development of tumors of the digestive system.
